re: Cata Healing, why does thou hate me?

SO. Cataclysm healing. I'm lazy and I actually have to work at healing now. Thanks expansion.

My first few dungeons were terrible. Granted I still had, and still have, some ICC gear on but I was all like "HAY, my heals are weak and my mana pool goes away faster than cake at fat camp, what gives?"

I did some reading Sunday on Elitist Jerks about resto shaman spec, glyphs and other fun stuff and discovered that I was a baddie.

YOU SHOULD ALL BE READING ABOUT YOUR NEW SHINY SPEC!

But don't just read the first post in a forum. Actually take time to read the comments. There are actually smart people in the comments who make excellent points you may have missed if you just read the forum maker's post/guide.

SO. Here are my initial tips to all us healers:

READ about your class and spec. A LOT has changed. Mana management, stat priorities, which spells to use, all that stuff is different. Read up on what is best for you now and put it to good use.
LISTEN during raids! Sadly we can't just zone out and then start healing with super heals like in WotLK. We will probably need to start making healing assignments. By assigning people we can hopefully increase our mana management and effectiveness by not having all healers spamming on the same person. This should help tank healing especially.
Lastly, don't quit reading. Cata is still new, things might change as people discover what things are really best. Crit is good today, maybe mastery is good tomorrow. Keep up on your forums and stay on top of your class and spec.

Now my little tid-bits for resto shamans:
I did a lot of reading today and I found out lots of cool things.
Here is the actual link, but I will highlight the most important/interesting parts:
http://elitistjerks.com/f79/t110263-resto_cataclysm_raiding_discussion/

First off 3/7/31 is the basic talent spec. It's what I'm rockin' and so far it is pretty excellent. (I love having instawolf, yum)

Major glyphs: Chain Heal, Healing Stream Totem, and Healing Wave

Prime glyphs: Earth Shield, Earthliving Weapon, and Riptide (Note: if mana is an issue switch earthliving for mana shield)

Stat priority: Int/Spirit > Crit (YES CRIT) > Haste > Mastery
When I first read the forum it said haste > crit so I tried that and not much changed for me. Then when I did more reading today (this is when I discovered how useful reading comments is the because the initial forum poster had the stats wrong) and switched my reforging to crit and WHAMMO! I had very little mana problems, it was spectacular.

WHY is crit so excellent? Because it gives us pretty little bonuses. Like Ancestral healing, ancestral awakening and procs improved watershield. All of these things are excellent to help out our healing. AH reduces damage taken = less healing. AA = free heal = less healing. Proc WS = FREE MANA = able to heal moar.
Sure haste can make you heal FASTER. But that just means you will go OOM faster. Crit on the other hand lets you heal harder when it procs and gives you bonuses that benefit your healing.
So yes Crit > haste.

And mastery. Poor poor mastery. Still basically as useless as ever. If you read the comments on the forum I linked there is some interesting discussion about it. What it boils down to is yes it makes your heals more powerful when your target is low health, but this increase in power isn't great enough to make up for the bonuses you get from other stats, like crit. I don't want to explain too much more about it. If you want to know why mastery is the suck, you can read it for yourself.

But YEEEEEEETY, what spells do I use?
Excellent question. Well, you are a shaman, just spam chain heal! WRONG.
Healing wave, Riptide and Healing rain are actually the wisest heals. They give you the most healing at the best cost. You can cast healing wave for days and not devour your mana pool. Chain heal is good, but it is fairly mana expensive for what it does. If you want to use AOE healing, cast healing rain. If you want to save someone. Cast riptide, or use unleased weapons and healing surge. Just want to heal someone all day? Cast healing wave. Also healing surge > healing wave. They heal for about the same and cost about the same, but healing surge is faster. Just get that heal off quick and move on.

Telluric Currents: (cast LB if it hits you get a % of your mana back)
People seem torn on this one, as am I. Some say it is excellent if you go 2/2 in it. Others are scared of it. It does have the high potential for easy mana if you spam your target, but my fear is that right now raids are healing intensive so who has time to cast some lightning bolts? Also I have no hit! I will lose mana if my LB doesn't land. So as of right now I will not say this is worth going into, but I won't say no to someone if they want to try it. Give it a test if you want, or keep reading until some more concrete numbers come up on it's effectiveness.

Hopefully none of you think I am yelling at you. But reading is very important. I thought I knew what I was doing when cata hit and I was very wrong. I just want all of us to get up to speed on our specs and so that we can do our jobs to the best of our abilities. I do it for da team!

Links!
Note: I have only read the resto shaman forum. But I always have used elitist jerks as my go to site for anything about any of my characters and it's always been excellent. So these are good starting reference sites but please, feel free to look up more sites.

I'd just like to quote something very important for everyone.

Quote:
2. Make sure every item has Spirit as a secondary stat.

This applies to every. single. healing class. You are doing yourself a major disservice if you are not picking up spirit pieces.

I know I'm not a healer. But I was for the entirety of our ICC days and I understand the art of healing. Even moreso in cataclysm, there is no glory in healing. There's either completing the mission or fucking up and us all dying. And for that I salute you all.

In fact, just take 5 minutes and go to http://www.mmo-champion.com/forums/247-Classes-Discussions , find your class and then read a little.

for as far as priests go- not that we have any but me but for our future priests/priestess' i found a mixture of mmo to be quite helpful and like they said read each completely through before making any decisions cause you may agree with one and not another.
