re: Important Post that YOU Should Read in its Entirety

Hey Scumbags,

As a guild, we've gotten ourselves into a very good position. Building off the successes we had towards the end of Wrath, and keeping with the policies and attitudes that achieved us those successes, we have without a doubt set up a very strong foundation this side of the Cataclysm that will drive us forward for as long as we'll let it. No, it's not terribly easy; this isn't Marrowgar or an AoE fest, but it is far more rewarding, and the work we put in during this first tier of content will pay dividends throughout the rest of the expansion. We're three bosses away from heroics, and after Monday we'll only be two away. This has all been a warm-up, and the real game will start before you know it. That being the case, I wanted to take the opportunity to go over a few things with all of you.

As you all know, we maintain a high standard in all aspects of this guild. Primarily, our members' attitudes not only in guild chat, but in their interaction with other members of the server, and even in cross-realm randoms, absolutely must convey a personal maturity and a sense of pride in the guild tag under your name. I will not suffer my guild members to disparage or provoke any of our fellow gamers, no matter their skill level at the game, for any reason. Should they provoke you (and it better be blatant and very dick-ish), then say whatever you like, so long as you say it privately (Trade or General or /yell are not acceptable places for those types of conversations). But if I find out that you called a 12 year old a "noobish fag" just because his DPS wasn't high enough, or you participated in a Trade Channel hate fest of a young mother who plays twice a week when she gets off work early and her child isn't yet home from kindergarten, then we will be having a very candid conversation. A guild's reputation is incredibly important.

That was more to reiterate an important hallmark of our guild's attitude, with no actual event in mind (don't get the wrong idea). This next point, though it ties heavily into the idea of a high standard expressed above, is maybe a little more specific, and was the impetus behind this post from the beginning.

There are two other important factors in your potential success within this guild, besides attitude, and those are your attendance and your performance. So far, as expected, overall attendance has been very acceptable, with only a few exceptions. That leaves us with, as currently the primary measure of your... we'll say "worth"... to the guild, your performance. This is not to say that if you perform, you can be a dick, or you can show up when you like. What I'm basically doing is issuing a standing edict: Perform, or be replaced.

I don't mean to sound overly harsh. I'm not out to get anyone, and I'm definitely not trying to be some hardcore badass douche-bag. Think of it more like a piece of very good advice that if you don't heed, you may regret it. There are a couple of reasons for this.

First, we're nearing a point in this tier of content where a higher level of performance overall will be required to continue our progression in a timely fashion. I don't mean that we intend to aim for world firsts, but I do mean that if we wish to kill an heroic mode boss before the next content patch, we're going to need to pick things up a touch.
Second, we're not the only guild reaching that point of progression. However, not all guilds are as solidly built as ours, and as such, there is a lot of potential for some of those guilds to break apart on the rocks, as is typical at more difficult stages of progression. Now this brings us back full circle to the start of this post: we have gotten ourselves into a very good position, not only because of our progression, but very largely due to our reputation as a solid and mature guild.

What this all means in the context of a performance driven evaluation system is this: there's a very real potential for an influx of applications to our guild in the near future. I'm not saying that it's guaranteed, but I am saying that if it happens, I will very definitely view it as an opportunity to improve our guild. All applications will of course be evaluated in the exact same way as our applications have always been evaluated, and if we have the opportunity to bring into the fold several exceptional players, then we will take that opportunity.

That will, however, lead me to having some conversations with some of our current members. Believe me when I say that I absolutely hate having those conversations. Unfortunately, that is the only way we can continue to improve beyond a certain plateau of performance. Now I certainly don't envision some massive overhaul and turnover of the guild, not by a long shot, but if we plan to add a few to the top, it will be the bottom that is sloughed off. So don't take this whole post and blow it out of proportion or get incredibly paranoid. Take from it instead what it was intended to be: very important advice.

This is a TEAM.

We are the raiding team called The Art of Ruin. We are out to compete and win championships by killing bosses.

And I hope you read the whole thing, because being surprised when I'm having that brief conversation with you won't prevent it from happening.

When people ask incredibly repetitive questions like "Where should I level at 36" or "Where can I buy dust of disappearance" can I still answer "In my butt"???????

Not a troll. This is a thing I do a lot.

I'm bumping my own fucking post barely 3 days after writing it. If you did not read this part, you should have.

If I can't post inside jokes on our own forums, then what's the point of being a GM? All our news posts are a little funny, to me at least, so anyone who thinks we're actually a cult is obviously too dumb to be in our guild. So to hell with them.

This is why I like playing with you guys! =]

I realize my raid attendance is floating around 60% in the last month, and that's because I work the craziest hours known to man. We plan on launching within a month, which means pretty soon I'll be out of work to do, and be more of 100% kind of raider. One favor to ask though, if you guys do ever feel like kicking me out because I suck, please let me stick around as guild mascot just so I can hang out. ;)

I enjoy bumping my own month-old posts. Read it, or re-read it. Or both.
