A veeeery interesting move. I would love to see the accounting done so that this makes sense. This is the kind of shit Blizzard Entertainment Inc. can only do. A developer has a AAA game ready to deploy bundles it free with a subscription to its AAA MMO which is its breadwinner. Now it has 2 dev teams essentially catering to a fantasy rpg/mmo crowd. This alleviates the problem of how do I keep these people jacked into the matrix by just throwing money at the problem. It wasn't feasible with one dev team because just adding more people isn't an issue there. This gives the 2 dev teams the freedom to not get bogged down by employee bloat and at the same time churn out 2 quality products with rabid fan bases and genuine interest in the property.
